A Local’s Holiday Guide: From the Columbia River Gorge to Mt. Hood
My Favorite Ways to Celebrate December Close to Home
December is one of my favorite months in the Gorge and on Mt. Hood. The lights are twinkling, the mountains are dusted with snow, and our small towns really come alive this time of year. It’s a season that reminds me why I love living and working here — the sense of community, the local traditions, and the little moments that make this place feel like home.
Whether you’re looking for festive things to do with family, a cozy spot to warm up, or ideas for supporting local businesses, I wanted to share a few of my favorite holiday experiences throughout Troutdale, Sandy, Hood River to Mt. Hood.
Windy Wonderland | Troutdale
One of my favorite ways to start the holiday season is by spending time in cozy, familiar places full of tradition—and Windy Wonderland in historic downtown Troutdale does just that. During the event, downtown transforms into a festive holiday village with twinkling lights, decorations, and a Christmas tree lighting that sets the mood instantly.
We stopped to see Santa, browsed the holiday market, enjoyed local vendors, seasonal treats, and warm drinks, all while holiday music played in the background. What I love most is the small-town feel—welcoming, relaxed, and full of charm. Windy Wonderland is a simple reminder of why the holidays feel so special and why Troutdale holds such a place in my heart.
Sip, Slide, and Believe: Holiday Experiences Around Mt. Hood
Seasonal Drinks at Mountain Moka | Sandy
If you’re heading toward the mountain or just running around town, I always suggest a stop at Mountain Moka. A holiday latte or hot chocolate in hand is the perfect way to warm up on a chilly day — especially before heading up toward Mt. Hood.
Mt. Hood Skibowl Adventure Park
Skibowl is always a favorite this time of year. Whether it’s tubing, skiing, or just playing in the snow, it’s one of those places that makes winter feel fun and memorable for families and visitors alike.
Polar Express Train Ride | Hood River
One of my favorite holiday traditions is looping around the mountain to Hood River for the Polar Express train ride. It’s such a magical experience, especially for kids — the kind of tradition families talk about and remember long after the season is over.
